I stumbled upon a new set of boxes in the pay-as-you-go aisle of Target this evening. The new provider on the block is Net10. From the way I’m reading the brocure, it looks like they’re a subsidiary of TracFone rather than an MVNO on top of TracFone’s network. Their schtick is simple: nationwide calling costs 10 cents. They also reward the purchase of larger refill cards by making the minutes last longer. For example, a $30, 300 minute card lasts 30 days, while a $180, 1800 minute card lasts 6 months. They also charge 5 cents a pop for text messages, which is less than what most carriers charge their montly invoiced customers.
The phone selection isn’t spectacular, but they get the job done. Available phones include the Nokia 1100 (which honestly I think is pretty cute), Nokia 2600, the funky Motorola C155, and the Motorola V171. The phones are relatively cheap without the frills that you might get on GoPhone or Boost Mobile, but the service is obviously aimed at cost-concious consumers who value a bargain over bling.
TracFone has done a smart thing by targeting a niche that has gone largely untapped. They need to keep on their toes though, bargain hunters don’t have much brand loyalty and the space could get very crowded very quickly.

What you should do when purchaseing any phone is check if the phone is compatible in your area. Make sure the carrier of the phone your purchaseing is compatible in your area. YES and PLEASE read the terms and condition for your tracfone and net10 or any phone for that matter. ALL you americans are so caught up critisizing the other part of the world you dont take the time to thinka bout what is really going on. Life is real and youronly here for a short period of time. Take that time to breathe count your blessings and stop acting all arrogant and hasty. Learn toread so you dont come on here talking crap about stuff u dont even really understand. In brief, some idiot employee gave me the wrong card because they did not have them displayed and I asked as usual “tracfone” but this last time they gave me the wrong one. Not for my NET10. Well I am screwed. Waste of Gas, time and money. Besides getting attitude from a shitty manager.
Around 1:00am August 11th the three men purchased cell phones from the Wal-Mart store on M-81 near the corner of M-24 in Caro. Wal-Mart places a limit on the number of cell phones that can be purchased at once, that number is three. The three men allegedly bought 80 by purchasing them three at time so that an alert wouldn’t be triggered by the cash register. They also paid cash.
The three men are described as being of Palestinian descent but live in Texas. Police say the three, ages 19, 22, and 23 appear to be naturalized citizens.
One man was driving while the other two were in the back opening the phone packages with box cutters throwing the phones in one box, batteries in another and the packaging and phone charger in another container. The suspects had 1000 other cell phones in the van. There was also a bag of receipts showing that someone was in Wisconsin the day before.
The phones were Nokia TracFones selling for $20 at Wal-Mart. For your twenty dollars you receive a phone charger and 40 minutes of airtime. The phones do not have to be registered with a name. Also discovered was a laptop with store addresses and store logos.
Tim Nausler with the Michigan State Police bomb squad says this has all the tell tale signs of using cell phones to detonate bombs. He says you need two phones to detonate a bomb one to be with the explosive and the other to make the call to that phone. In some instances he says you can detonate with one phone using the alarm clock function.
On Tuesday, Houssaiky, age 20, and his friend, Osma Sabhi Abulhassan (Osma is pronounced “Osama”), also 20 and also from Dearborn, were caught in Marietta, Ohio with several cellphones and about $10,000 in cash. They admitted to buying over 600 pay-as-you-go TracFone cellphones, removing the chips, and selling them to their “boss” for $5 (each) over the cost of the phones. The chips are used in bombs by Islamic terrorist groups and have been used to detonate many carbombs. And their “boss” is the subject of an open investigation by the FBI.

Well… really don’t care… Making reference on what Argentino said, that is too easy to unblock a cell phone and make it work on another carrier, I have done that before, it takes no more than 30 seconds to make the phone as new… so, if I have done that before with not a lot of money, think on what this people can do with thousands of $… really amazing… Now the US is starting to get on their knees with this people… EASY…

I’m really sorry to read that, unfortunately… if you go to any store, NO ONE will issue a refund on that card. Cards have printed a message NO REFUNDABLE. And yes, you’re screwed thanks to a store employee, they don’t even know how to do what they have to do. Believe me, I worked as a cashier in the states and never had problems with a customer giving or selling wrong stuff. I can recommend you, next time if you have a TracFone cell phone ask for a TracFone card, just be specific….
I bought a Motorola 171 Trac phone yesterday. I have no other issues with it except I can’t find a site where I can add new ringtones to it. I called customer service and was told my model does not allow downloading. Where can I find a site to get new ringtones that does not require downloading?
hi! i work for tracfone, i have done it for 7 months and.. I am very very very tired!!!!!!! The job is very frustrating. and everything that I `ve read is true, waht you custs says and waht my coworkers says. why do you always think that we are in india? we are in colombia, bolivia, argentina, beliz, and I dont know in what other places. we are like 12 calls centers, and custs think that they call and talk to maria they can call again and tlak to maria oh my god!!! and it is true about mexicans they are more difficult than americans but they at least try… and the apologize if they make a mistake.and another thing we all are AMERICAN. hey people! after 10 months I’m back… to keep bothering customers hahahaha… can you believe this shit? I spent 30 minutes today with a “lady” trying to get the IMEI of her phone and never able to press the menu button!!! damn!!! I just went back today and found that crap! finally we found out that the BLZ center is getting bigger and our Cordoba friends are going (I’ll miss you C.G).. that’s not good shit… they better close BLZ instead of Cordoba… well… nothing else to say for today… let’s bother people another time, have to sleep now, i’m getting tired and sick of that shit called CrapFone customers… they’re getting my life unhappy…
After failing to add minutes on time and not being able to re-activate the Net10 phone for my wife, I turned to the Internet and found this forum. To say the least, I was horrified to hear that I may encounter so many problems in order to reinstate the service.
So I called tech support last Sunday afternoon. Granted that it was difficult to understand them (so many call centers are outsourced to India and Philippines these days), they still were super friendly. They offered to send me a new SIM card as I was expecting, and told me to wait for 5 business days. I did not expect much, really. Imagine my surprise when I found a package from Net10 at my doorstep 2 days later. I plugged in the new SIM car, punched in my IMEA and SIM serial numbers along with the PIN from the calling card , restarted the phone and I was back on the air. Sure, the phone was assigned a new number but the leftover minutes got carried over. Couldn’t ask for more.
I am genuinely sorry for those folks that keep having trouble with their Net10 phones, but I can only thank this company for the superb service they offer.
I will definitely make sure to refuel my wife’s minutes before they expire next month. Thanks for taking care of us, Net10 folks!

Yeesh…I bought a Net10 phone at Radio Shack. The phone itself is wonderful! It’s the only pre-paid that will give me service where I live. It alays has signal, the batteries have lasted a while. I’m not really a yapper on the phone, so my service time is racking up. It’s good until well into next year. A 300 minute phone card lasts me about a good month.
MY PROBLEM is Radio Shack, where I bought the phone! They charged me $89 for my phone. Later (the same day) I saw the same phone in a nearby town for $29. I went back to Radio Shack screaming-mad. They told me that it was because the phones had been “modified” to work in our area. Whatever.
But I’m really happy with my phone. It was cheap. I can afford it. And if I ever get tired of it…a new phone is just thirty bucks away.
(BTW: Battery is dying on my friend’s Net10 phone…we went to Radio Shack and they wanted 50-bucks for a new battery. Heck, today he can get a brand new phone for that much!)
I was only trying to find a workaround for the Net10 website ‘contact us’ link, that won’t recognize that either my ph# or IMEI is there.
